We Published the AI & Subscription Funnel, Paywall & Retention Teardown Map

We signed up, paid for, and cancelled 17 AI and SaaS services first-party to compare 32 onboarding gates, pricing ladders, and multi-step cancellation & save-offer flows alongside 9 global UX teardown archives and 8 US/Korea dark-pattern regulations (49 entries total) in an interactive slide viewer and filterable table.

Our eighteenth industry map examines conversion funnels, paywall psychology, and subscription cancellation & retention ("Save Offer") architectures across AI and SaaS. Between October 15 and October 17, 2026, we created test accounts, subscribed to paid tiers, and clicked all the way through final cancellation screens across 17 domestic and global AI services. Combining 32 first-party UI funnel flows, 9 global UX teardown archives, and 8 US and Korean dark-pattern regulatory benchmarks (49 entries total), the map pairs a filterable database with an interactive step-by-step modal viewer.

  • Five core categories (49 entries): ① Signup & Onboarding Gates (12 · Google Antigravity, Perplexity, Canva, ChatGPT, Claude, Runway, Notion, Suno, Cursor, v0 by Vercel, Figma, CapCut), ② Paywall & Pricing Psychology (14 · Kling AI, v0, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Suno, Runway, Notion, Canva, Figma, Cursor, Claude, Replit, HeyGen, and in-app overlay modals), ③ Cancellation & Retention Save Offers (6 · Typecast 4-step downsell, ElevenLabs 5-step 30% discount, Google Workspace 6-step Paid Pause + email typing gate, 1-click win-back buttons, and personalized loss quantification), ④ Global UI Teardown Archives (9 · Mobbin, Pageflows, Built for Mars, Growth.Design, GoodUI, Deceptive Design, Baymard Institute, PaywallScreens, WWIT), and ⑤ US & Korea Dark-Pattern Regulations (8 · Korea Amended E-Commerce Act Art. 21-2, Korea PIPA Art. 22, US FTC Click-to-Cancel / ROSCA, California Automatic Renewal Law AB 2863, and Copyright Fair Use).
  • Interactive step-by-step slide viewer (6 flagship flows): Step through ① ElevenLabs' 5-step cancellation & 30% Save Offer, ② Typecast's 4-step downgrade defense, ③ Google Workspace's 6-step deletion scare & $1.68/mo Paid Pause, ④ Canva's Korea-IP 2-step PIPA consent gate, ⑤ Google Antigravity's 1-click consent modal, and ⑥ Kling AI vs. Perplexity/ChatGPT pricing psychology — complete with exact modal copy, CTA button hierarchy, psychological triggers, and US/KR legal verdicts.
  • Eight filter axes: Region, Funnel Category (with secondary-category toggle), Conversion/Save Tactic (0-click instant trial, unchecked optional boxes ☐, strikethrough anchoring, 1st-month promo, downgrade offer, one-time discount Save Offer, Paid Pause, 1-click post-cancel resume), Click Count, Psychological Trigger, Legal Compliance (🟢 Compliant Best Practice / 🟡 Caution / 🔴 Dark Pattern Risk), Tier, and Revenue Model.

What stood out while testing 17 services first-party

  • Onboarding has split into 0-click instant trials and unbundled opt-in checkboxes (☐). Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Suno allow immediate logged-out prompting or music streaming on the home screen before ever asking for an email (✔). When users do sign up under strict privacy regimes like South Korea's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA Art. 22), Canva routes Korean IPs through a 2-step gate where [Agree and continue] stays disabled until three mandatory boxes are checked (✔), whereas Google Antigravity handles mandatory Terms via a 1-click button while separating optional evaluation and marketing consent into two unchecked (☐) checkboxes — achieving 1-click speed and full regulatory compliance simultaneously (✔).
  • The 2026 AI pricing ladder has converged on $20/mo anchored against $200/mo Max tiers and new low-cost ad tiers. ChatGPT Plus (₩29,000/mo), Claude Pro ($20/mo), Perplexity Pro ($20/mo, VAT included), Cursor Pro ($20/mo), and v0 Premium ($20/mo) all anchor their core individual plan at $20/month while placing a 10x $159–$200/month tier alongside it (✔). Meanwhile, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go (₩13,000/mo, VAT included) with light ads to capture price-sensitive free users (✔). By contrast, promotional countdown tables like Kling AI — displaying a giant $6.99 first-month price while burying the $8.80/month auto-renewal price in tiny grey print (✔) — face mounting regulatory risk under Korea's "Silent Renewal" ban and California's ARL.
  • The best retention flows replace hostile "Roach Motels" with tangible loss translation, symmetric Save Offer buttons, and 1-click resume. In our live cancellation tests, Google Workspace buried cancellation inside a ⋮ MORE overflow menu, flashed a giant red 11.1 MB · 106 Emails permanently deleted warning, pitched an 80%-off Paid Pause ($8.40 → $1.68/mo), and forced the admin to check a mandatory box and manually type their full email address across 6 steps (✔). By contrast, ElevenLabs let us cancel in 4 clean clicks while deploying three high-converting, fully compliant mechanisms: ① translating 30,731 remaining credits into ~31 mins of generated audio, ② offering 30% off next month ($5 → $3.50) on Step 4 with [Accept offer] and [Cancel Subscription] styled as identical white-outline buttons side by side (satisfying California AB 2863 and Korea KFTC rules), and ③ displaying a 1-click [Resume subscription] button immediately after cancellation (✔). Korea's Typecast similarly pitched a 60%-cheaper Pro tier downsell (₩99,000 → ₩39,000/mo) on Step 1 and provided a 1-click [Undo Plan Cancellation] button (✔).

Notes on methodology & Fair Use

  • Every first-party flow and pricing figure was verified directly on live production screens between October 15 and October 17, 2026 (✔). Secondary revenue estimates for private UX teardown companies are marked △.
