Launching the AI Character Chat & Companion Market Map

We mapped 140 AI character chat platforms, 1-on-1 companions, official IP bots, voice and hardware companions, B2B character engines and global regulations across the US, China, Korea, Japan, Europe and beyond — filterable across 13 dimensions with source verdicts on every metric.

Our fourth market map covers AI character chat and digital companions. We compiled 140 entries across the US, China, Korea, Japan, Europe and beyond — spanning UGC character platforms, 1-on-1 companion apps, official webtoon and game IP bots, voice and hardware companions, B2B character engines, and national regulations and benchmarks. Research is as of October 13, 2026.

What Stood Out While Building It

  • Monetization diverges sharply by region — and Korean and Chinese apps reached profitability first via per-message credits and advertising. US pioneer Character.AI built roughly 20M MAU and 150M monthly web visits, yet struggled to cover heavy long-context inference costs on a $9.99/month subscription alone, leading to its $2.7B non-exclusive Google licensing deal and founder return in August 2024 before adding ads and per-action Charms in 2026. By contrast, Hong Kong-listed MiniMax generated more revenue from online advertising ($11.19M) than subscriptions ($6.60M) across Talkie and Xingye in the first nine months of 2025 ($18.75M total). In Korea, Scatter Lab's Zeta turned profitable in Q4 2024 by combining per-message credits with ads, ranking #1 globally in romance/adult AI app gross revenue in H1 2026 ($33M, Appfigures) with roughly 80% of its revenue coming from Japan. Wrtn Technologies likewise spun out its character chat app Crack, launched creator cash-outs in September 2026, and hit KRW 10B/month within three months on its North American app OOC — driving KRW 47.1B in 2025 company-wide revenue and a KRW 100B Series C at a KRW 1T+ valuation.
  • Minor protection laws and emotional-dependency regulations took effect across major markets simultaneously in 2025–2026. In the US, after settling five teen harm lawsuits, Character.AI ended open-ended chat for users under 18 in November 2025, as New York's AI companion safeguards (effective November 2025), California's SB 243 (effective January 1, 2026 — mandating AI disclosures, 3-hour break reminders for minors, suicide prevention protocols and a private right of action), and the FTC's Section 6(b) inquiry into seven companies reshaped compliance costs. In China, following regulatory summonses in mid-2025 and a wave of app shutdowns (Maopaoya, Yishijie Huixiang), five ministries enacted the Interim Measures for Anthropomorphic AI Interactive Services (effective July 15, 2026), banning emotional manipulation and virtual romantic relationships for minors. Australia's eSafety codes (March 2026), UK Ofcom enforcement, and Korea's pending youth AI safety bill round out the 33 regulatory entries in the map.
  • Direct web billing and open-source roleplay infrastructure form a massive shadow market invisible to app store trackers. According to OpenRouter's 100-trillion-token study (December 2025), roughly 52% of all open-source LLM token consumption goes to roleplay and character chat. Meanwhile, web-first platforms that bypass app store content filters and 15–30% commissions — including Janitor AI (132M monthly visits), SpicyChat (69.6M), Candy.ai (62.7M), PolyBuzz (55.6M) and OurDream (47.5M) — dominate the a16z Top 50 Gen AI Web list while remaining absent from mobile app revenue trackers (Appfigures, Sensor Tower). Relying on either inflated analyst reports ($17B–$38B) or mobile-only app store totals (~$600M annualized) misses half the picture.

Notes on Reading the Map

  • For general-purpose AI assistants (Category ⑤ · ChatGPT, Meta AI, Doubao, Adot, etc.), headline metrics reflect the parent app's total user base rather than companion-only usage; they are separated into their own category so they do not distort standalone app comparisons.
  • Every figure is marked ✔ when verified against primary filings or official disclosures, △ when based on press reporting or third-party estimates, and ✘ when sources conflict or lack primary backing.
  • Both Korean (/ko/maps/character-chat/) and English (/en/maps/character-chat/) editions are live. If you spot a figure to update or a player to add, let us know via the corrections link in the header.
